The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is a competition for students under the age of twenty who have not yet started university. The competition draws teams from all over the world to compete in examinations which are of a standard between those found in first and second year university courses in Australia.
The expressions of interest from Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, German Democratic Republic, Poland and the Soviet Union in 1989 led to the formation of the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). The following year (July 1990) these six nations participated in the first IBO.
